Traffic Closure But Business As Usual

Route 88 (Library Road) northbound is closed at the intersection with Route 51 (Saw Mill Run Boulevard) in Overbrook, and people who usually commute using that road can expect traffic headaches during the next five months. The closure allows PennDOT to handle bridge replacement and road work.

Access to businesses in the work zone area will be accommodated, PennDOT officials said.

PennDOT's posted detour relies on Route 19 (named locally as Washington Road, Cochran Road and West Liberty Avenue). It is a long detour, as follows:

  • Take Route 88 (Library Road) southbound to Connor Road (Route 3038)
  • Turn right onto Connor Road and follow to Washington Road (Route 19)
  • Turn right onto Washington Road (Route 19)
  • At the split with Cochran Road (Route 19), continue straight on Washington Road (Truck 19/Route 3069)
  • Washington Road becomes West Liberty Avenue
  • Follow West Liberty Avenue to Route 51
  • End detour

Brookline may be affected as drivers seek unofficial alternate routes, although no official detour passes through that neighborhood.

Hillview Street will also close for roadwork and culvert repair. Some pedestrian traffic will also be affected by the construction, as the staircase along Hillview Street will close. Pedestrians will use a temporary crossing on Route 88.

Glenbury Street at the intersection with Route 51 reopens to traffic.

A dedicated right hand turn lane from southbound Route 51 to southbound Route 88 will open to traffic.

The work is part of the $19 million Route 51/88 project, which includes replacing five bridges, constructing a new bridge, turning lane construction, roadway reconstruction, utility relocation, signal upgrades, lighting, sidewalk and drainage improvements, CCTV cameras and stream bank restoration. When complete, traffic signals along Route 51 will be timed for longer green cycles, easing traffic along Saw Mill Run Boulevard.

The construction affects about 42,000 cars daily. To help keep motorists informed as work on the Route 51/88 project continues, PennDOT created an email for traffic advisories and construction updates. Enroll by sending email addresses to stcowan@pa.gov and writing “Subscribe – Route 51/88” in the subject line. Traffic information throughout the construction is also available at 511pa.com.
