The 51-Carrick bus offers fast transit to a variety of shopping and restaurants, hair salons, other businesses and – seasonally – a farmers market along Brownsville Road in Carrick. The inbound bus continues to the South Side, Station Square and downtown Pittsburgh. Outbound, 51-Carrick stops in Brentwood, Baldwin and West Mifflin. The bus runs frequently.
60% of the apartments are subsidized to help ensure that seniors have affordable housing available. There are 66 units.
“Hillcrest Senior Residences will fill a real need in South Pittsburgh, enabling seniors to live independently, in the neighborhood they have always called home,” then-City Councilor Natalia Rudiak said when the complex was announced in the mid 2010s. The $15 million independent-living project was helped along by a $1 million tax credit by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA). PHFA awards are designed to stimulate the construction of affordable rental housing.
The new construction replaced a blighted sight along Brownsville Road that was once a Giant Eagle.
The Hillcrest Senior Residences project was developed by The Community Builders, which applied for tax credits and manages the mixed-income apartment building. The Community Builders, based in Boston, is one of the largest nonprofit development corporations in the United States. They have constructed or preserved more than 300 affordable and mixed-income housing developments in 14 states and Washington, D.C., using public and private financing.
Hillcrest Senior Residences are located at 2948 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227 – right at the Pittsburgh border with Brentwood.
